Former Director General of Police Mohammad Mustafa, his wife Razia Sultana, a former minister from the state, are among four who have been booked by Haryana Police in connection with the death of their son Aqil Akhtar, days after the 33-year-old was found dead under mysterious circumstances. Police had earlier said that Aqil was found unconscious by his family at his Sector 4 house in the Mansa Devi Complex area of Panchkula. The police recorded their statements and did not raise any suspicion or allege foul play. The body was handed over to the family after the post-mortem the following day. The family subsequently took the body to their native village in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, and performed the last rites. The case took a U-turn when Shamshudeen Chaudhary, a resident of Malerkotla in Punjab, held a press conference in Panchkula, citing a social media post by Aqil in August, which contained serious allegations against his family members and expressed apprehension about threat to his life. Chaudhary also shared a screenshot of a diary and lodged a written complaint with the Panchkula Police, the Haryana DGP and chief minister Nayab Singh Saini, demanding a fair and impartial investigation. According to Shrishti Gupta, DCP, Panchkula,we have now filed an FIR under sections of murder and conspiracy. FIR has been registered against the family members, including the deceased's father, mother, sister, and wife. The complainant has expressed suspicions based on the allegations of foul play.

However, another video has now gone viral in which Aqeel is seen giving a clean chit to his family and dismissing his previous allegations of torture. In the three-minute clip, he says that all the allegations he had previously made against his family were baseless and made when he was mentally unwell, claiming he was suffering from schizophrenia. Aqeel also mentioned how his family has been taking good care of him, saying that his sister looked after him a lot.
“My sister used to give me medicine. I used to think she was giving me poison, so I wouldn’t take it. She used to tell me, ‘Take the medicine,’” he said. “Thank God, I am blessed with such a family,” he added, before the video takes a sinister turn once again. Aqeel then reverts to blaming his family, saying, “Let’s see what comes out of life, whether they eventually kill me,” before ending the video by cursing them. Razia Sultana, former MLA from Malerkotla, served as a cabinet minister in the Congress government in Punjab from 2017-2022. She lost in Malerkotla in the 2022 state polls.
