Flash floods, landslides hit several districts in Nagaland, 9 dead

In Nagaland, flash floods and landslides triggered by torrential rains across several districts on Sunday, causing widespread damage and loss of lives. In Mon District, nine people were killed after flash floods and landslides washed away houses. Joint Chief Executive Officer of the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, Johnny Ruangmei said that the bodies of four victims, including three women and one man, have been recovered, while efforts are on to retrieve the remaining five. Four persons trapped under debris at Naginimora were rescued with grievous injuries. Landslides were reported at ten locations in Mon district, damaging homes, roads and public infrastructure. Several areas remain inundated, major roads are blocked, and affected families have been shifted to safer locations. 
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has expressed grief over the loss of lives and said that the Government is closely monitoring the situation and that search and rescue operations are underway. He also announced an ex gratia of four lakh rupees for the next of kin of each deceased and 74 thousand rupees for each injured person.  Landslides were also reported from Wokha and Mokokchung districts. In the Chümoukedima district, a 57-year-old man was swept away while attempting to cross a river. The NSDMA has issued an Orange Alert for all districts of the state till Monday.
The monsoon had virtually stalled for nearly three weeks during June, leading to one of the driest starts in more than a century. However, a series of low-pressure systems over central India and the Bay of Bengal revived the monsoon circulation in early July, bringing widespread rain across large parts of the country. Scientists have attributed the intense downpours to climate change, which is amplifying rainfall intensity when it finally arrives.
