In the lead-up to French President, Emmanuel Macron’s visit as the chief guest for India’s Republic Day celebrations, the extensive preparations underscore the deepening bilateral ties between the two nations, with a notable focus on defense, trade, and education collaborations. Building on the momentum of last year’s Bastille Day visit by Prime Minister Modi to France, this high-level engagement signifies a strategic commitment to further strengthening diplomatic relations and means to forward the 'Horizon 2047 Roadmap.
Additionally, the meeting between President Macron and PM Modi on the sidelines of the New Delhi G20 summit last year reinforced their mutual pledge to enhance ties. Both countries also have an active interest in maintaining peace and stability in the Indian Ocean region. For France, we have been witnessing an active interest from the country in the greater South Asia region, as evident through President Macron's much talked about visits to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh last year. The interest also aligns with France’s broader Indo-Pacific strategy and its aspirations for a greater role.
"For Prime Minister Modi, approaching elections add a political dimension to the celebrations around the visit. While the likelihood of PM Modi's re-election seems strong, the diplomatic focus extends beyond domestic politics. Over the last year, under PM Modi, the Indian government has prioritized expanding its international network of allies and fostering strategic and economic partnerships. President Macron’s visit becomes a significant opportunity to advance this agenda."
While substantial progress on cooperative initiatives may not materialize immediately, the discussions during the visit are expected to deepen commitments and pave the way for future collaborations and a shared vision.
