Ex-Indian cricket captain Azharuddin sworn in as minister in Telangana

Former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin was sworn in as a minister in Telangana CM A Revanth Reddy’s cabinet on Friday. In a simple function held at Raj Bhavan, Governor Jishnu Dev Verma administered the oaths to the former Indian skipper.With Azharuddin’s induction, the strength of the Telangana cabinet has risen to 16, leaving room for two more ministers. As per the Assembly strength, the state can have up to 18 ministers.Talking to reporters after the swearing-in ceremony, Azharuddin thanked Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior party leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and K C Venugopal for making him a minister.He added, “Whatever responsibility I am given, I will work honestly for the upliftment of the oppressed people. G. Kishan Reddy can say anything. I do not need a certificate of patriotism from anyone.

His appointment came even as the BJP sharply criticised the move, calling it “political appeasement” aimed at minority-vote banking ahead of the bypoll. The BJP described the induction of Azharuddin as a reward for electoral expedience rather than merit-based governance. The BJP further accused the Congress of engineering the appointment to strengthen its position among Muslim voters in Jubilee Hills, alleging that the timing of the cabinet expansion is closely tied to the bypoll campaign
