Germany, in an incredible way, overcame the opening game loss to France and kept alive their knock out stage chances. They stun defending Euro cup champion Portugal 4-2 on Saturday and climb up to 2nd spot in Group F next to France. Four times World Cup and three times Euro cup winner Germany’s sterling performance put them as serious contender for the title.
In a sizzling encounter, Portugal, against the run of German’s fast paced game, grabbed the early lead when captain Cristiano Ronaldo tapped a low cross from Bernardo Silva into the goal in 15th minute. This is Ronaldo’s 3rd goal in the tournament. But their lead proved short-lived. The German forwards sparkling game put the Portuguese defenders in hey wire. And that resulted in Portugal conceding two own goals by Ruben Dias in 35th minute and Raphael Guerriero in 39th minute. Thus, within four minutes Germany went ahead with 2-1 lead.
Germany sealed the game in their favor in the second half with two more goals from Kai Havertz and Robin Gosens. Those winning goals came in 51st and 60th minute. Portuguese with full force tried to come back in the game when Diogu Jota pulled a goal back for his team in 67th minute. But they failed to finish the game on equal level. Now Germany’s win over Portugal blew Group F wide open. Earlier in this group, France played draw with Hungary 1-1. In this scenario, the outcome of Wednesday’s final group matches will decide the team’s spot for the knock out stage. In this Group of Death, Germany will clash with Hungary and the French will face holders Portugal. It will be very interesting to watch these upcoming encounters.
