England reaches the Euro Cup final for the first time ever in the history of European Championship. They edged out Denmark 2-1 in the semifinal on Wednesday. So, the Super Sunday final sets up between Italy and England. In the semifinal clash, England were on the top throughout but struggled to break the sturdy Denmark defense wall. The Danes went ahead 1-0 in 30th minute when Mikkel Damsgaard’s swerving free kick surprised the diving Jordan Pickford and landed in the net. This was the first time for England fallen behind in this tournament. But they soon get the opportunity to level the score1-1, when Simon Kjaer’s attempt to stop a low cross pass to England’s star striker Sterling Raheem, neutralized Denmark’s lead.
In quest of winning shot, England put all pressures on Denmark in the 2nd half. Despite relentless passing and probing around the goal box, they struggled to find a winner. And the match rolled into extra time with 1-1 score line. Skipper Harry Kane, Sterling and Jack Grealish made forays into the rival’s area but found the Dane goalkeeper stood like a rock. Schmeichel’s spectacular saves foiled their attempts to win the game. England got the best chance when Sterling was brought down by Joakim Maehle in the penalty area. The referee awarded them VAR-reviewed penalty. Schmeichel stunningly blocked Harry Kane’s shot but Captain Kane pounced upon the rebound to strike the winning goal in 104th minute.
So, Denmark’s dream of reaching the final 2nd time ended after a hard-fought battle with England. For the Danes, it was tough to end their emotional ride from the fear and distress of Christian Eriksen’s opening game collapse to their first semifinal since their surprising Euro Cup win in 1992. However they left the Wembley Stadium with their heads held high.
And England after a hard-earned win in the semifinal will face Azzurri in the final on Sunday. They reached to the semifinal stage without conceding a goal till Denmark’s success in piercing their rearguard. So, Captain Harry Kane and his team will have to rejig the strategy and bolster their game plan to win the coveted title. England’s last major tournament win was 1966 World Cup.
