At least eight devotees were killed and over 10 others injured in a tragic road accident in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district on Thursday, after a light commercial vehicle collided with a tanker near Mantralayam, police said.The victims, including five women, were travelling for darshan at the revered Mantralayam Temple, dedicated to Sri Raghavendra Swamy, when the vehicle carrying nearly 20 passengers rammed into a tanker, resulting in a severe impact.
According to officials, five people died on the spot, while three others succumbed to injuries during treatment at a nearby hospital. Around 10 to 12 injured passengers were rushed to Emmiganur hospital, where their condition is currently being monitored.Yemmiganur Deputy SP N Bhargavi said rescue teams were immediately deployed to the site following the incident, and relief operations were carried out to evacuate the injured and clear the wreckage.Preliminary reports suggest that the victims were pilgrims from Karnataka who had visited Mantralayam and were returning at the time of the accident.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock over the incident and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families. He also directed officials to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the injured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief over the loss of lives, describing the incident as deeply painful. In a message posted on X, the Prime Minister’s Office conveyed condolences and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.An ex gratia of Rs2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) has been announced for the next of kin of each deceased, while Rs50,000 will be provided to those injured.
