GST collections rise 16.4% to over Rs2.01 lakh crore in May

India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections continued their strong upward trajectory in May 2025, rising 16.4% year-on-year to Rs 2,01,143 crore, according to official data released on Sunday. This robust performance follows a record-breaking April, when monthly GST revenues reached an all-time high of Rs 2.37 lakh crore. May’s uptick was driven by a sharp increase in GST collections from imports, which jumped 25.2% to Rs 51,266 crore. Domestic transactions also contributed to the momentum, registering a 13.7% rise to Rs 1.50 lakh crore.
Breakdown of May 2025 GST collections is as follows:
•Central GST (CGST): Rs 35,434 crore
•State GST (SGST): Rs 43,902 crore
•Integrated GST (IGST): Rs 1,09,315 crore
•Cess: Rs 12,879 crore
Net GST revenue, after accounting for refunds, stood at approximately Rs 1.74 lakh crore — a 20.4% increase compared to the Rs 1.44 lakh crore collected in May 2024. Refunds in May saw a modest decline of 4% to Rs 27,210 crore. The May 2025 gross collections mark the third consecutive month where revenues have surpassed the Rs 2 lakh crore mark, signalling a sustained recovery in consumption and compliance post-pandemic.
M S Mani, Partner at Deloitte India, pointed out the considerable disparities in GST growth rates among states. “While large states like Maharashtra, West Bengal, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu have shown strong growth between 17% and 25%, others like Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana have reported modest gains of up to 6%,” Mani stated.
States such as Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan posted moderate increases around 10%. “The average national growth masks regional variations that likely stem from sectoral dependencies and seasonal economic patterns. A deeper, data-driven analysis is required to understand these trends,” he added.
Analysts believe that sustained GST growth reflects not only economic activity but also better tax administration and increased compliance. The continuous improvement in revenue from imports is also seen as a reflection of revived demand and industrial activity.
