China's ruling Communist Party has concluded on Thursday its closely watched annual political meeting known as sixth plenary session with the passage of a rare resolution reinforcing President Xi Jinping's stature in its political history, as he looks set for an unprecedented third term as country’s leader next year. Xi is only the third leader to have a historical resolution adopted during his presidency, after Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping in 1945 and 1981 respectively. Passage of the resolution puts Xi in the same league as Mao and Deng, who consolidated their power and acquired a special place in Chinese and communist party histories.
The resolution on the party's "achievements and historical experiences" since its founding 100 years ago was passed at the end of a four-day, closed-door meeting of more than 300 top leaders on its Central Committee, state media reported. The sixth plenum is the last major meeting before a party congress next year where a decision will be made on Xi's future. China approved the removal of the two-term limit on the presidency in 2018, effectively allowing Xi to remain in power indefinitely.
At this meeting, the party eulogized the role of Xi by enshrining his ideology - "Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era" in an official party document. The resolution has established Xi Jinping's core position on the Party Central Committee and in the Party as a whole and defined the guiding role of Xi Jinping Thought. State media reported quoting the communique issued after the meeting, the party decided to resolutely uphold Xi Jinping’s core position on the central committee and in the party as a whole and upholding the central committee’ authority.
