In the United States, the California State Assembly has adopted a resolution recognising November 8 this year as Diwali Day and urging people across the state to join in the celebrations.The resolution, moved by assembly members Darshana Patel and Ash Kalra, also expresses deepest respect for Indian Americans and the Indian diaspora in California and throughout the world on this prominent occasion. "...the Assembly recognizes this year's Diwali festival on Sunday, November 8, 2026, and encourages Californians to take part in this joyous day of celebration," said the resolution, adopted by the assembly on Thursday.The resolution expressed deep respect for Indian Americans and the Indian diaspora in California and around the world on the occasion of Diwali. The resolution said Diwali is celebrated in diverse ways and symbolises the triumph of good over evil. It highlights themes of overcoming struggles, embracing positivity and humility, and upholding kindness despite personal challenges.
Diwali or Deepavali, which means “a row of lamps,” is one of the world’s oldest holidays that brings families, friends, and communities together for a celebration of generosity, unity, joy, appreciation, and a time of reflection, the resolution said. “Diwali, commonly referred to as the Festival of Lights, is a time when homes are brightened with candles, oil lanterns, and clay lamps and the skies are filled with firecrackers to show respect for good health, wealth, knowledge, peace, and prosperity,” it said.
Earlier, several US states, including Delaware, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts, also issued special proclamations to commemorate August 15, as India Day, celebrating India’s independence, rich heritage and diversity.
