The Bundelkhand region,divided between the states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, holds a strong unity. According to the evidence related to the past, this area was formerly known as Jejakabhukti.Bundela Rajputs and Malwa Sultans who left their mark on this land with beautiful architecture, Scattered around the whole region.The place is famous for its apt geographical location as well as for being a symbol of cultural heritage in the country. Glorious Khangar dynasty essentially ruled the majority of the Bundelkhand regions, They had taken over the hilly areas by overthrowing Chandelas.When the Khangar dynasty was ruling over Bundelkhand, the name of the place was actually Jujhauti. Bundelkhand has many places of tourists attraction. Despite rich culture and tourist places the region is facing connectivity problems, especially in the MP side. And because of poor connectivity, foreign tourists face a lot of difficulties to reach here. Even domestic tourists also avoid it. Major tourist places of Bundelkhand region:
Khajuraho - This old heritage city which got its name due to the abundance of Khajur Tree (Date Palm) found in the area. Temples with artifacts which are world heritage are scattered around the city.The main reason why Khajuraho is immensely popular is that it is home to several 10 century sculptures. These sculptures were historically known to represent fine living and eroticism. It is also known for its annual Classical dance festival called Khajuraho Dance Festival.
Jhansi - Veerangana Maharani Laxmibai's Karma Sthal, Jhansi Fort is very famous among tourists. The fort was built in 1613 by Raja Veer Singh Zu Dev of Orchha.Jhansi is in UP and a major railway junction also. The Jhansi museum houses some of the historical information of the Chandelas. The history of Jhansi spans from the regime of the Chandela Kings before the 12th century till the British Raj in India.
Panna - National Tiger Reserve is situated here. It has an area of 542.67 km2 (209.53 sq mi). animals found here are the Tiger, Leopard, Cheetal , Chinkara, Nilgai, Sambar Sloth bear and 200 different species of birds. Panna district is about 50 K M from Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh.
Chitrakoot - Vanasthali of Lord Shri Rama and religious city of Bundelkhand, this city is situated on the banks of river Mandakini , flourished with many magnificent temples. Millions of devotees visit here every year. The half of Chitrakoot comes under UP and the rest is situated in Madhya Pradesh. Chitrakoot is well connected from both the states. The beauty of Chitrakoot is-the UP part falls under the Bundelkhand region while MP Chtrakoot is a part of Baghelkhand region of Satna district. Means a district which is spread over in two regions.
Orchha- historic town is located along the banks of Betwa river , Orchha, once the capital of Bundela Rajputs, is a beautiful small town in Bundelkhand.The Siddha Temple of Ramraja Sarkar, the fort built by Maharaja Vir Singh Joo Dev, the place of Jahangir Mahal, Lala Hardaul is a very popular tourist destination in Orcha. Orcha is 20 KM from Jhansi but situated in MP. The state govt has last year declared Orcha a separate district.
Kalinjar Fort - Situated in Banda district of Uttar Prades has the Sher Shah Suri's Tomb, Neelkanth Temple, Invincible Fort, Shail Chitra are very famous. The famous Kalinjar Fort is also a trourist's attraction. The fort is situated in a jungle and on a hilltop.
Mau Sahaniya Chhatarpur - Museum of Maharaj Chhatrasal is located here. This museum keeps the accounts of the life of the great king. The Museum is called Dhubela museum also.
Garh Kundar - The invincible fortress of King Khet Singh Khangar is popular among tourists.The fort is situated in Tikamgarh district of MP.
Sonagiri - A wonderful place with Jain temples situated on a hill. Sonagiri is about 20 kilometer from Datia district headquarter.
Datia - The famous Pitambara Siddheshwar Peeth is situated in the city which gathers lakhs of devotees every year.
Ajaygarh - In Panna district of Madhya Pradesh Aman Mahal is situated.The fort was built by King Ajay Pal.
Kundeshwar - Famous ord Shankar temple is located here. The place is situated in Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh.
The Yogi government of UP did many things to promote tourism in Bundelkhand. The first ropeway of Chitrakoot has been constructed in Uttar Pradesh. Till now it takes tourists about half an hour to reach Laxman hill. For this, 400 stairs have to be climbed, in which the elderly have a lot of difficulty. This route can be easily fixed by ropeway. The government is taking necessary action to take off the aircraft at Chitrakoot's Devangana airstrip at the earliest. The beautification work of Maharishi Valmiki's ashram continuesThe Ramayana circuit was connected to Chitrakoot. Ghats and localities of Mandakini ji have been developed. In Chitrakoot a sewage treatment plant(STP) is going on. The project cost is Rs 55 crores. Laxmi pond has also been cleaned. Soon this historic pond will a tourists attraction.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had announced a 6-lane expressway to connect Bundelkhand with Delhi in his first visit to Jhansi. The government conducted an aerial survey for the proposed Bundelkhand Expressway. The foundation stone of this mega expressway project, connecting Chitrakoot to Agra highway near Auraiya, likely to laid by the Prime Minister, The 296-km-long expressway benefiting the districts of Chitrakoot, Banda, Mahoba, Hamirpur, Jalaun, Auraiya and Etawah will now provide direct road connectivity to Bundelkhand from Lucknow and Delhi. Industrial parks will be established and industries will be set up in these parks as per regional requirements which will directly benefit the farmers. This will generate direct or in diferct employment also.
UP's Forest Corporation and Tourism Department will also provide holiday packages, these packages includes lodging, boarding and train facilities for tourists. The government is now preparing to make these places tourist-friendly hot destinations. Home stay will get a boost. This scheme is being started in the districts of Terai as well as Bundelkhand and Vindhya region.
Madhya Pradesh government should also follow the UP model of connectivity and other other infrastructure development so that every spot should be accessible to tourists- domestic as well as foreigners. This will enhance the indirect employment and revenue also.
