BRICS Summit : PM Modi calls for global governance reforms

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called for comprehensive reforms in global governance, urging BRICS nations to ensure greater representation and participation of the Global South in shaping the emerging world order.
Addressing the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, PM Modi welcomed the participating leaders and said India’s BRICS chairship was guided by a people-centric and “Humanity First” approach. He noted that the grouping has reached a “coming of age” moment as it completes two decades.“Now is the time for us to translate our unity and consensus within BRICS into tangible results on the global stage,” Modi said.

India’s chairship has focused on resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability, with more than 350 BRICS-related meetings organised across around 30 Indian cities.
PM Modi Pushes 10-Point Reform Roadmap
Calling for a transformation of the existing “pyramid of power and privilege” into a “platform of partnership”, Modi said the Global South has often remained at the “front row” of global crises but at the “back row” of decision-making.He proposed developing 10 global governance reform proposals into a BRICS Reform Roadmap by the next summit. The roadmap, he said, should focus on representation, responsiveness and rule-making.Modi also called for time-bound reforms of the United Nations Security Council and greater alignment of voting power and leadership in international financial institutions with present-day economic realities.

Focus on Emerging Technologies
The Prime Minister stressed the need for equal participation of Global South countries in framing global rules for artificial intelligence, cyberspace, outer space, biotechnology and critical technologies. He said BRICS should help young diplomats and policymakers from developing countries gain negotiation skills, practical training and legal expertise, enabling the Global South to move from being a “rule-taker” to a “rule-shaper.”
Modi Seeks Continuity in BRICS Working
With the BRICS presidency rotating annually, Modi proposed a new continuity and implementation mechanism to maintain institutional momentum. He suggested using the BRICS Troika for follow-up and establishing a secure digital repository to track decisions, deadlines and implementation progress.Modi also called for a mechanism to ensure the safety and security of seafarers, stressing that protecting maritime workers is essential for the smooth functioning of global trade.
BRICS New Delhi Declaration Agreed
In a significant development during India’s BRICS chairship, member countries have agreed on a joint BRICS New Delhi Declaration amid ongoing conflicts in West Asia. The declaration is expected to deplore all forms of aggression without naming any specific country and underline that dialogue and diplomacy remain the way forward to resolve conflicts. The agreement on a joint statement is being seen as an important diplomatic outcome for India as it seeks to strengthen BRICS cooperation and build consensus among its diverse members.

As BRICS enters its third decade, Modi called on the grouping to develop an ambitious agenda for the next 20 years and convert its unity and consensus into concrete outcomes on the global stage.
