Bangladesh records highest Covid death toll since March last year

In the midst of the ongoing countrywide strict lockdown, Bangladesh reported the highest number of deaths in a single day due to Corona on Sunday. According to the data released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 153 people died and 8661 new cases of COVID 19 infections were reported from across the country on Sunday. The death toll has now reached 15,065 and the total number of infected people in the country since March last year has crossed 9.44 lakh.The number of active cases in the country has  gone up to 95,955 which is over 10 percent of the total cases.
The sample positivity rate also went up to 28.99 percent on Sunday from the level of 27.39 percent on Saturday and 28.27 percent on Friday.Meanwhile, the premier medical research institute of Bangladesh Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) in its latest report on the COVID situation in the country reported that in June the Delta variant was the most dominant strain among the sample of infected persons While the number of patients in hospitals is increasing across the country, the spokesperson for DGHS assured that as of now there is no shortage production and supply of oxygen for the hospitals. He said the government is looking into media reports of deaths in some hospitals due to shortage of oxygen. 

Bangladesh remained shut down on the fourth day of the countrywide strict lockdown which started on July 1 to contain the spiralling COVID 19 infection in the country. Very few vehicles were seen on the roads in the capital city Dhaka on Sunday. Shops were also closed except those which sold items of daily use and medicines.Cities like Rajshahi, Khulna, Pabna, Noakhali, Patuakhali and Bhola among others reported strict observance of the lockdown. Police, Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB), Navy and RAB are patrolling the town to ensure strict restrictions. In cities and towns also police and armed forces are imposing fines on people and detaining a few for violating the lockdown provisions. Meanwhile, Bangladesh received 2.5 million doses of the Moderna COVID 19 vaccine gifted by the US under the COVAX framework of WHO. The consignment was received at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka by the Foreign Minister Dr. A K Abdul Momen along with health Minister Zahid Maleque and the US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl Miller.
