At least 55 killed in Nepal flash flood, Bihar, UP borders on alert

At least 55 people have died, and 133 Indians remain missing after massive flash floods swept through Nepal’s northern Rasuwa district along the Tibet border on Wednesday, leaving behind a trail of destruction across villages, roads, bridges and key infrastructure. Nearly 400 people were missing after the disaster hit the Himalayan country, authorities said. Security footage from the Chinese side of the Nepal-Tibet border captured the terrifying moments before a massive surge of rock, mud and water swept through the area, destroying buildings and vehicles and killing several people.

According to the Nepal Tourism Board, at least 384 travellers, including 291 foreigners and 93 Nepali nationals, are reported missing from the flood-affected area. Among the foreigners, 105 are Indian nationals, the officials said. They had gone for the Kailash Mansarover yatra with various travel agencies. The official said that at least 26 Nepal Police personnel are still missing in Rasuwa district. Thirty five NRIs among a group of 47 tourists are missing in Nepal after the deadly floods, Sagar Pandey, owner of Himalayan Glacier Adventures said. “They had left Kathmandu yesterday for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. They were staying at different hotels in Rasuwa. The exact cause of the mudslide remained uncertain. However, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported that a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck around seven minutes before the timestamp visible on the security footage.

In India, Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary on Wednesday directed officials to remain on alert amid the flash floods in Nepal's upper catchment areas and the possibility of increased water flow in the Gandak River. During a high-level review meeting in Patna, the Chief Minister instructed officials of affected and vulnerable districts to closely monitor the situation and ensure all necessary arrangements are in place. CM Chaudhary asked authorities in districts connected with the Gandak river, including West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Saran, Muzaffarpur and Vaishali, to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures.NDRF officials said six teams are on standby in border villages of Bihar as Nepal floods threaten to impact districts including Muzaffarpur, West Champaran, East Champaran and Siwan. Officials said the water level is likely to rise in Bihar only after a few hours. No impact has been reported so far.
In UP also vigil has been intesifies in districts alongside Gandak river. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed concern over the severe flooding in Nepal’s Bhotekoshi River and prayed to Lord Pashupatinath for everyone’s safety. In view of the possibility of a rise in the Gandak-Narayani river water levels in Maharajganj and Kushinagar due to the floods in Nepal, he directed the local administration to remain fully alert and ensure all necessary preparations.
