Assam’s healthcare infrastructure set to undergo transformation: Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said the state’s healthcare infrastructure is undergoing a major transformation with a focus on expanding medical facilities, strengthening healthcare education and creating a skilled medical workforce.Highlighting the government’s initiatives, Sarma said the ongoing efforts are not limited to building hospitals but are aimed at improving healthcare access, modernising medical education and ensuring better health outcomes for people across Assam.
In a social media post, the Chief Minister said the state is witnessing a significant expansion of medical infrastructure, with multiple medical colleges and associated healthcare facilities being developed across districts.According to details shared by Sarma, 11 new medical college campuses are currently under construction at an estimated cost of Rs8,233 crore. Of these, five campuses are expected to be completed by 2026.He said six hospitals linked to the upcoming medical colleges have already achieved more than 80 per cent physical progress, while work on five additional hospitals is underway. Four more healthcare projects are also in the pipeline.
Sarma said the expansion programme is aimed at ensuring that quality healthcare facilities and medical education opportunities are accessible across all districts of Assam. The Chief Minister noted that strengthening healthcare infrastructure will help reduce regional disparities, improve access to specialised medical services and enhance the state’s ability to address future public health challenges. He also emphasised that the expansion of medical institutions will contribute to developing a larger pool of doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals, reducing dependence on other states for advanced medical treatment and education.
Over the past few years, Assam has witnessed rapid growth in medical education infrastructure, with the state government working towards establishing medical colleges in more districts. The expansion has significantly increased the availability of MBBS seats and strengthened the healthcare ecosystem. The development complements existing major healthcare institutions, including All India Institute of Medical Sciences Guwahati and government medical colleges that have enhanced tertiary healthcare services in the state.
