Angioplasty scam exposed in Ahmedabad, 5 dead, probe ordered

A free medical camp turned into a nightmare for several patients at Khyati Hospital in Ahmedabad, as five people died following what are being called unnecessary angioplasty procedures.. The hospital, located in Bodakdev, organized a free medical camp under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), where 19 individuals underwent angiography, and seven received stents. Investigators claim that these procedures were performed without adequate disclosure or consent from patients or their families.
According to information, the scam came to light after two patients died due to complications following angioplasty. The crime branch has since launched an extensive investigation, raiding the homes of hospital CEO Chirag Rajput and director Kartik Patel. Notices have also been issued to other hospital officials and doctors involved in the case. Allegations reportedly suggest that the camp was organized without official authorization, and consent forms were reportedly signed post-surgery rather than before.
The Gujarat Health Department has ordered an inquiry to determine if the surgeries were medically justified. Experts from the U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and GMERS Civil Hospital have been tasked with reviewing surgical procedures and evidence, including video recordings of the operations.
Further scrutiny has revealed that Khyati Hospital claimed over Rs.27 crore from the government for cardiology treatments, raising concerns about financial exploitation under PM-JAY. Amidst public outrage, questions have also emerged regarding the potential involvement of influential figures linked to the hospital. Authorities are expected to release detailed findings soon as pressure mounts for accountability and stricter oversight of medical practices. The case has amplified calls for reforms in healthcare governance, particularly in the implementation of government-sponsored schemes like PM-JAY.
