The government has appointed senior IPS officer Anand Swaroop as the new Special Secretary (Internal Security) in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), according to a government order issued on Thursday.The appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Swaroop will succeed Praveen Vashista, who is currently holding the post.
According to information, Anand Swaroop is a 1992-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre. At present, he is serving as Director General (Investigation) at the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).As per the order, Swaroop’s tenure as Special Secretary (Internal Security) will be from the date he assumes charge until August 31, 2029 — the date of his superannuation — or until further orders, whichever is earlier.The ACC has also approved the appointment of 1994-batch IPS officer Anupama Nilekar Chandra as Director General (Investigation) at the NHRC. Chandra, who belongs to the IPS and is currently working as Special Director General at the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), will take over the role following Swaroop’s move to the MHA.
