Bickering in Congress leaders over party President election indicates that all is not well in the century old party. Though CWC meeting is over but its after effects are still be seen. The Kerala Congress leaders called Shashi Tharoor a "guest actor" in the party, One UP Congress leader demands action against Ghulam Nabi Azad, The Shahjehanpur Congress Committee has reportedly started canpaign against Jitin Prasad. Senior leader Kapil Sibal opposed such move and gave his statement in Jitin's support. The differences came on the surface following the letter and twitter war episode. After the high drama seven hours meeting of CWC , the Committee passed a resolution that Sonia Gandhi will continue to be the interim president of the Congress until the All India Congress Committee (AICC) holds its next session.
Brushing up the internal conflicts among top party leaders, signatories to the controversial letters and the dissidents have also been sidelined. To clip the wings of letter writers ...Sonia Gandhi in her first such step appointed Jairam Ramesh as chief whip of the Congress in the Rajya Sabha. Mrs Gandhi also formed a committee in the Rajya Sabha with Congress party's treasurer and her political advisor Ahmed Patel and another loyalist KC Venugopal to deal with issues that may come up in the Rajya Sabha. Former union minister P Chidambaram, former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijay Singh and LS member from Punjab Amar Singh are other members of this Committee. Jairam Ramesh will be its convener.
The party named Gaurav Gogoi its deputy leader in the Lok Sabha and formed two groups for smooth functioning and effective coordination in both the Houses of Parliament. Ravneet Singh Bittu has also been made as one of the whips of the party in the Lok Sabha.
Senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad had batted for election to the party posts. Azad,in the letter suggested that state Congress chiefs, district presidents, block presidents and the Congress Working Committee members should be elected. He said that an election has the benefit that when you fight elections, at least your party is 51 per cent behind you. Right now, the person who becomes president might not even have one per cent support. If CWC members are elected then they cannot be removed. So what is the problem, Azad said.
Azad and other signatories to the letter who are members of the CWC were attacked as "traitors" at a big meet on Monday last in which both Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi were present. Issues raised in the letter were overtaken by condemnation of the letter writers.
Meanwhile requesting anonymity due to the “ongoing smear campaign against each of them”, Congress leaders, who were signatory to the letter, said that though they would welcome Rahul back at the party’s helm, the former and possibly future party chief “must recognise that not everyone demanding change in the workings of the Congress is an enemy”.
The seven hour meeting witnessed high drama with Ms. Gandhi reiterating her intention to step down. Rahul Gandhi questiones the timing of a letter from a section of party leaders seeking a leadership change and calling it "an insult to his mother". Following the sharp comments against the dissenters, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha,Ghulam Nabi Azad offeres to resign over barbs from colleagues, while Ahmed Patel asks Rahul Gandhi to take back the reins of the party.
At the end of the day, it is clear that the letters and tweeter war episode will haunt the age old Congress Party. Experts also say that the high command should start a damage control exercise, otherwise the grand old party could see another spilt.
