In Gujarat, a plane crashed in the Meghaninagar area near Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon, police said. The plane caught fire after crashing and fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the blaze, said fire officer Jayesh Khadia. An Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner carrying 242 people crashed immediately after taking off from Ahmedabad airport. The flight was going to London. There were 232 passengers and 10 crew, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said. A video of the aircraft flying low and struggling to gain altitude shows the plane slamming the ground and exploding in a massive ball of fire at 1.38 pm. The flight was identified as Air India 171, which online flight trackers showed as a 1:10 pm service from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad to Gatwick Airport in London.

The plane was being flown by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and First Officer Clive Kundar. In a statement, Air India said that the flight—AI171—was heading to London's Gatwick from Ahmedabad. “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025,” Air India said in a statement. “At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest on our website and on our X handle.” Meanwhile, relief and rescue efforts are underway at the site of Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad.

As many as three NDRF teams, comprising 90 personnel, have been deployed to the crash site from Gandhinagar. Three additional teams are being moved from Vadodara, the NDRF added. PM Modi spoke to Home Minister Amit Shah and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu. He has asked them to go to Ahmedabad and ensure all possible assistance is extended to those affected in the wake of the air mishap.
