Day 2 of the India AI Impact Summit 2026 witnessed sharp debates around data dominance, inclusive growth and the global balance of power in artificial intelligence, with former G20 Sherpa and ex-CEO of NITI Aayog Amitabh Kant stating that India is providing 33% more data to OpenAI’s ChatGPT than the United States. Speaking at the panel discussion titled ‘AI for India’s Next Billion: Intergenerational Insights for Inclusive and Future-Ready Growth’, Kant said the real challenge before policymakers is ensuring AI benefits those at the bottom of the economic pyramid and across the Global South. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, meanwhile, reiterated that the core objective of the summit is to ensure artificial intelligence serves the larger public good.“The challenge is whether we can ensure that AI reaches those below poverty line, vast segments of population, whether AI can be used to transform lives of citizens in the Global South, and whether AI can be used to improve learning outcomes, improve nutrition standards, which are major challenges before the world,” Kant said.
He added, “The important thing is that today, we in India, if you look at OpenAI, ChatGPT, we are providing more data than the United States of America — 33% more data than what the United States of America is doing. These large language models are getting better and better on the basis of data from the Global South. So the models are getting refined, and data for the Global South, they will create business models and sell you products at a very high cost tomorrow.”Kant cautioned that without a strong framework of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), artificial intelligence risks creating a deeply unequal global society, dominated by advanced economies and large technology corporations.
The summit, being held at Bharat Mandapam from February 16 to 20, is being billed as the first global AI summit hosted in the Global South.
In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi said, “Intelligence, rationality and decision-making ability make science and technology useful for every citizen. The objective of the India AI Impact Summit is also the same — to ensure that AI is used for the benefit of all.”The summit’s focus remains firmly on the big questions shaping the future of AI — from job disruption and public health to algorithms, child safety and the rising demand for data centres. Day 2 promises intense discussions on how automation could reshape employment, how AI tools are being deployed in healthcare, and what safeguards are needed for responsible algorithm design.
