8 new Rajya Sabha members take oath, Kharge re-appointed LoP

Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan on Monday administered the oath or affirmation to eight newly elected and re-elected Members of Parliament in separate ceremonies held at the Parliament House and the Rajya Sabha Chamber. Among those who took the oath was Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, who was re-elected to the Upper House from Karnataka. Kharge took the oath in Hindi at a ceremony held in Parliament House. The Rajya Sabha Chairman also administered the oath to seven newly elected and re-elected members in the Rajya Sabha Chamber. The members included Mansingh Meraman Parmar, Tarun Chugh, Dr. Alka Singh, Jitendra Meghjibhai Kanzariya, Rajendra Hiralal Jain, M. Nagaraja and Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi.

Kharge was later re-recognised as the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha in accordance with the provisions of Section 2 of the Salary and Allowances of Leaders of Opposition in Parliament Act, 1977, and for all purposes of the said Act,” Rajya Sabha Secretary-General Mody said in a bulletin. Holding a copy of the Constitution in his hand, Kharge took the oath separately in Radhakrishnan’s chamber.
The members took the oath or affirmation in different Indian languages, reflecting the country’s linguistic diversity. Four members took the oath in Hindi, while one each took the oath in Kannada, Punjabi and Manipuri. Among the newly sworn-in members, two represent Gujarat, while one each represents Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur and Rajasthan.
