4 Rhinos released into wild at Dudhwa Tiger Reserve

In a significant step for wildlife conservation, the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department has released four greater one-horned rhinoceroses into the wild at Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, increasing the number of free-ranging rhinos in the reserve to eight.The rhinos comprising one male and three females aged between 15 and 25 years were translocated from a 27-square-kilometre fenced rehabilitation area within the reserve to a suitable grassland habitat in its core zone. The move marks a major push to strengthen rhino populations in India’s Terai region.The translocation was carried out by specialised teams, including noted wildlife veterinarian Dr KK Sharma, who assisted in tranquilising the animals. The rhinos were fitted with radio collars and released after thorough health assessments to ensure their readiness for the wild.
H Rajamohan, Field Director of Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, described the initiative as a “giant leap” for rhino conservation efforts in the region.Experts have highlighted the ecological significance of the move. Dr Dipankar Ghose, Senior Director of Biodiversity Conservation at WWF-India, said that establishing a viable population of free-ranging rhinos would benefit the larger Terai Arc Landscape, one of the country’s most productive ecosystems.He added that rhinos serve as key indicators of healthy grassland ecosystems and are often referred to as “ecological engineers” due to their role in controlling invasive vegetation through continuous grazing.
The latest release builds on earlier translocation efforts undertaken by the forest department. Four rhinos were released from the rehabilitation area in November 2024 and March 2025, and their behaviour and health have since been closely monitored by authorities and experts. Initial findings indicate that the animals have adapted well to the habitat, providing confidence for subsequent translocation exercises.To ensure their safety and monitor their movement, a joint team from the forest department and WWF-India has established a dedicated monitoring mechanism, including a control room within the reserve. The animals are being tracked using VHF and satellite-based systems.The initiative is expected to further strengthen conservation outcomes in the Terai landscape while reinforcing India’s efforts to revive and sustain populations of the iconic one-horned rhinoceros.
