The Congress-led Karnataka government is in favour to hold a common entrance test (CET) score for the state's students. As per information, the government is planning to move a resolution in the ongoing legislature session to urge the Centre to allow a state quota in medical admissions based on common entrance test (CET) score. Sources said that The government is not in a mood to oppose NEET as it has been upheld by the Supreme Court. Instead, it would also seek accommodation for the state's students based on their CET (medical) score. This would ensure justice to Karnataka students as the NEET, in its present style, was helping students mostly from high income groups trained in coaching centres, an official source said.
Recently, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led Tamil Nadu government passed a resolution against NEET and asked Centre to allow state governments to undertake medical admissions.Several regional parties, including Manithaneya Makkal Katchi, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), supported the resolution."Tamil Nadu has been consistently saying that we do not want NEET. Now it is proved that NEET is not a fair examination, and students are losing so much because of NEET," MP K Kanimozhi had said while speaking to news agency ANI.
The resolution draft was awaiting clearance from chief minister Siddaramaiah and if approved, would be placed before the Legislature for passing, said sources. If passed in the state Assembly, Karnataka will conduct its own competitive exams for the selection of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in medical colleges. The development comes amid the ongoing nationwide row over irregularities in NEET-UG 2024 exams and the paper leak cases.
