Actor Imran Khan, who is reported to be a US citizen and an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder, has been directed by Mumbai Police to leave India by 28 October 2026. The notice reportedly follows his participation in a protest at Mumbai's August Kranti Maidan on 10 October, calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO) in Mumbai issued the notice, dated October 14, four days after police briefly detained Khan at a protest in Mumbai.Khan received the notice on Thursday, said his counsel Parvez Memon and added that he will challenged the said in the Bombay high court.
The notice alleges that he violated the rules applicable to foreign nationals by participating in the protest. An OCI card allows eligible foreign citizens of Indian origin certain privileges, including a lifelong, multiple-entry visa to India. However, it does not grant political rights reserved for Indian citizens, including the right to vote or contest elections.
Section 7 empowers the Central Government to regulate or restrict the entry, departure or continued presence of foreign nationals in India. It also allows the government to impose conditions on their stay and movement in the country.
Section 29 deals with the removal of foreign nationals from India. It provides for the removal of a foreigner in circumstances covered by the Act, including violations of its provisions or orders made under it and cases involving an adverse security report.
