Assam to be free from menace of child marriage by 2026: CM Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assured that the state will be free from the menace of child marriage by 2026. Replying to a question in the state assembly on Monday,  Sarma who is also holding the charge of Home department, said that his government is committed to make Assam free from the evil of child marriage. He said that crackdown against the violators will be continued and over 900 charge-sheets have been filed recently. Sarma informed that since 2006, a total of 4 thousand 510 persons have been arrested in the state in child marriage cases. He ruled out the allegation that the POSCO Act is being misused by the police while taking action against child marriage.

The Chief Minister further mentioned that steps are being taken to rehab the victims of child marriage cases along with creating awareness on how to prevent child marriages.
