Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the first 'Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav', a festival to showcase the cultural, social and economic fabric of the eight northeastern states, beginning in New Delhi on December 6, Union Minister for Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Friday. The 'Mahotsav' will provide an unprecedented platform to showcase the region's vibrant textile industry, artisanal crafts and unique Geographical Indication (GI) products, Scindia said at a press conference.Scindia highlighted that the Asthalakshmi Mahotsav is named after the eight avatars of Goddess Lakshmi, symbolizing prosperity, wealth, knowledge, dharma, agriculture, and other features. He added that the Festival is part of the government’s vision to make North-East the development engine of the nation. The Minister also launched the event’s mascot – Purvi, a young girl representing the North-East, with elements from each state featured in her attire. Chief Ministers of all the eight states will also be present during the event for a Chief Ministers’ Panel Discussion. Scindia said that the Mahotsav will not only showcase the cultural richness of the Northeast but also serve as a catalyst for economic development, creating new opportunities for artisans, weavers, and entrepreneurs from the region.

The eight northeastern states -- Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura and Sikkim -- are often referred to as the 'Ashtalaxmi' or eight forms of prosperity. They contribute significantly to India's cultural, social and economic fabric.
