Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister and Congress leader Kamal Nath on Saturday said that the joint rally of Opposition’s INDIA bloc in Bhopal has been cancelled. After the first INDIA coordination committee meeting on Wednesday, DMK MP TR Balu had announced that the opposition bloc will start its joint campaign in Madhya Pradesh, where elections are due later this year. He had said that the first rally will be held in Bhopal in the first week of October. In reply to a question, All India Congress Committee general secretary in charge Randeep Singh Surjewala also said the party chief has yet not taken a decision about INDIA bloc rally in Bhopal.
Reacting to the development, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan said that the rally was cancelled due to the public anger over “Sanatana Dharma” remarks by Tamil Nadu Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, whose party DMK is part of the INDIA alliance.Understand that our faith has been attacked. This attack will not be tolerated at any cost. There is public anger, hence the rally was cancelled. People will not let this go, CM Chouhan said.
Meanwhile, former Congress President Sonia Gandhi told the members of the Congress Working Committee that the party has to fight unitedly with INDIA against the BJP. In his opening remarks at the CWC meeting - the first since he took over as the Congress president last year - Mallikarjun Kharge launched an all-out attack on the BJP and the Centre and said that it has been a “complete failure on all important fronts”. Mr Kharge alleged that the Modi government has not been able to control inflation, unemployment, widening inequality or the deteriorating condition of farmers and labourers.Stating that India is at a crossroads and is facing many internal challenges, Kharge said the whole country is witnessing the tragic events that are still unfolding in Manipur. The Modi government allowed the fire of Manipur to reach Nuh in Haryana,he alleged.
