ECI orders revision of electoral rolls in J&K, 3 other states

The Election Commission has directed for the updation of electoral rolls in Jammu and Kashmir. 1st of next month will be the qualifying date. With this, preparations for J&K assembly elections will be initiated.  The Commission has also initiated the preparations for forthcoming assembly polls in Haryana, Maharashtra and Jharkhand. The updation of the electoral rolls in these states will also start with 1st July as the qualifying date. The term of the existing assemblies of Haryana and Maharashtra are going to end in November this year while in Jharkhand it will end in January next year.  
The last Special Summary Revision of electoral rolls was conducted in all the States and Union Territories with 1st January 2024 as the qualifying date. After the amendment in the  Representation of the People Act, of 1950, the provision of four qualifying dates in a year is available now. Accordingly, the Commission has decided to conduct a second Special Summary Revision of electoral rolls with 1 July 2024 as a qualifying date in Haryana, Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Jammu and Kashmir. The aim is to provide ample opportunity to all eligible and unenrolled citizens to get themselves enrolled and get the chance to vote in the upcoming elections. The poll body asserted that it firmly believes that pure, inclusive and updated electoral rolls are the foundation of free, fair and credible elections.
