The government on Tuesday introduced the Women's Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha. The Bill has been named Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal tabled the 128th Amendment Bill, 2023 in this regard. Introducing the bill, he said that once the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam is passed, the number of seats for women in Lok Sabha will increase to 181. The Lok Sabha has been adjourned for the day after introduction of the bill.
As per Live Law report, this bill seeks to reserve 33 percent of seats in the Lok Sabha, the state legislatures, and the Delhi legislative assembly for women. According to the Bill, women reservation will take effect after the delimitation exercise following the first census after the the Bill becomes a law. Women reservation will come into end after 15 years from the date of its commencement. The bill was tabled in the first Lok Sabha session held in the new Parliament house. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described it as a "historic occasion". "We have had a lot of discussion over women's reservation bill for several years. But finally, yesterday in a cabinet meeting, our govenment approved the bill that will be introduced today", PM Modi said.
Discussion for passing of the Bill in the House will be taken up on Wednesday. The Bill will be taken up in Rajya Sabha on September 21 government sources said.Women's Reservation Bill was passed by Rajya Sabha in 2010 and it was not taken up in Lok Sabha and lapsed in the lower House of Parliament.
