Bengal SSC will challenge HC order on teacher jobs

West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) Chairman Siddharth Majumder has said it will challenge the Calcutta High Court order cancelling all appointments made through a 2016 teacher recruitment test."The court has nullified about 24,000 jobs and we will approach the Supreme Court, after going through the complete high court order,” Majumder told reporters in Kolkata. The Calcutta High Court on Monday ordered cancellation of all appointments made through the recruitment process of the State Level Selection Test-2016 (SLST) in West Bengal government-sponsored and aided schools, declaring it as “null and void”.A division bench of Justices Debangsu Basak and Md Shabbar Rashidi said the school teachers recruited illegally after submitting blank OMR sheets must return their salaries within four weeks. District magistrates have been tasked with collecting the money from these teachers. The court has made an exception in its order, ensuring that one of the appointees, Soma Das who is undergoing cancer treatment, retains her job on humanitarian grounds.
The cancelled recruitment panel includes all appointments of teaching and non-teaching staff, hired through an WBSC entrance examination in 2016, to various state-government-sponsored and aided schools in Bengal. The bench also ordered the re-evaluation of as many as 23 lakh OMR sheets (test paper) of the recruitment entrance exam that had been conducted. It rejected a request by some appellants for a stay on the order. The bench also directed the CBI to undertake further investigation into the matter with respect to the appointment process, and submit a report in three months.More than 23 lakh candidates appeared for the 2016 State Level Selection Test (SLST) conducted by the WBSSC for over 24,000 vacant posts.
Former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Ganguly, who is now a BJP candidate from Bengal's Tamluk in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, had ordered the CBI investigation into the case.Several Trinamool leaders, including former education minister Partha Chatterjee, and former officials are in jail in connection with the teacher recruitment case.
Reacting to the order, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said BJP leaders are "influencing the judiciary and the judgments".Referring to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari's prediction last week of a political "explosion", she said, "He predicted an explosion. What is the explosion? Snatching the jobs of 26,000 people and pushing them towards death. How did they know what the court will rule if they did not write the judgment?" BJP Bengal too targeted the Trinamool government and said Ms Banerjee and her no. 2 in the party, her nephew Abhishek Banerjee, are set to face defeat.
